Rice Grasshopper

Rice Grasshopper (<i>Oxya yezoensis</i>)

The phooto shows a Rice Grasshopper (Oxya yezoensis, family: Catantopidae, order: Orthoptera) exhibiting its peculiar black bands on its side. The Japanese name kobane-inago (ko=short/small bane (hane)=wing, inago=grasshopper) comes from the shorter wings of the grasshopper -- most of them have short wings -- shorter than the abdomen (click here). The people in Japan used to distinguish batta and inago both of which describe the types of Acrididae by their morphology (but not any more).
